On screening my calls…
August 19th, 2005
For some reason, I keep getting these wrong numbers on my cell phone lately.
Yesterday I got some man who I was convinced I’d called him for door services. I mean, it wasn’t enough that I said I thought he had the wrong number, he kept at it:
“Hello?”
“Is this Angela?”
“Um, I think you have the wrong number.”
“What’s your name?”
“I think you have the wrong number.”
“I got your name from Dave, he said you needed some work done on your door.”
“I don’t know any Dave and I don’t need any work done on my door.”
“Oh. Sorry about that.”
Then, just now:
“Hello?”
“Mrs. Bennet?”
“Um, I think you have the wrong number.”
” *pause* Oh. *turns head away from phone and starts cussing out the kids screaming in the background* ”
Sometimes, it’s exciting to get a glimpse in other peoples’ lives. Sometimes, it’s really just awkward.

You think that’s bad. I’m using someone else’s SIM card in India. I have his real number, but I regularly have to deal with repeat calls from people going ‘Anil? Anil?’ who don’t speak English so I can’t explain to them that I’ll give the number.
Also, I recently got a call from the carrier saying I hadn’t sent in the appropriate identity forms to prove that I was me (i.e. not me, Anil). I’m sure they were happy to hear that I was not Anil, that I didn’t know his address or full name and that I couldn’t fill out the forms for myself because I’m not Indian–which, theoretically, also means I can’t have a SIM card in the first place. That was an awkward conversation.
Mmm… Good post
